Tower Crane Parts

Some of the most wonderful structures throughout the world are made using cranes. The newer cranes are used in order to reach higher heights. Tower cranes provide the way to transport and lift tools, building parts and materials all over a construction location. There are various parts which assemble a tower crane when they are put together. Putting a tower crane together utilizes different pieces of construction machinery.

Base

The tower crane base is normally made from a steel unit. The units' base connects to a custom pad made of concrete. This type of set-up provides the structure with stability. Overall, the construction should be engineered and built well in order to operate at optimum safety.

Mast

The mast of the tower crane provides height to the machinery. The mast is made of attached steel parts. The amount of parts determines the crane's height. Usually, a tower crane has a design that allows the mast to grow during construction by adding more parts as the building process continues. This way the crane's height can be specified, ensuring it has adequate height to efficiently and safely carry out the needed work.

Slewing Unit/Top Climber

A slewing unit is situated at the top of the mast. This unit houses the machines and the motor that enables the crane to rotate. A top climber is the piece of machine that allows the mast to grow. The top climber is situated just underneath the slewing unit. Hydraulic rams inside the top climber allow the slewing unit to be detached from the mast by raising it higher.

Boom

The term "boom", refers to the working arm of a tower crane. The boom is made up of separate steel parts that are connected together, extending out from the top of the slewing unit and parallel to the ground. There is a trolley connected to the base that can run the length of the boom. This particular trolley holds the hoisting mechanism.
