Diesel Forklifts Versus Electric Forklifts
Forklifts are powered one of two ways, either by internal combustion (IC) motor or by electric motor. Electric forklifts are best for use indoors and cost a lot less to utilize. IC equipment are suitable for outdoor use and are faster to refuel.
Electric Forklifts
Electric lifts produce no exhaust, that makes them the machine of choice for indoor applications where air quality is a concern. Electric forklifts are clean and are not noisy. They are 20 - 40 percent more expensive to buy than IC lifts, but the per-hour operating cost of electric models is much lower. The downside is that batteries need 16 hours to charge and cool down, so purchasing an extra set of batteries is suggested. Electric lifts are not limited for use indoors, but when used outdoors they must be utilized carefully.
Diesel Forklifts
Internal Combustion forklifts have a higher carrying capacity than electric forklifts and are generally used for outdoor applications. If your fleet normally operates on one type of fuel, it might be a wise choice to buy an IC unit which uses the same type of fuel. They can function on propane, diesel or gas. Diesel is the most economical. IC forklifts have the advantage of being easy to refuel and less expensive to operate; however, their operating cost on a per hour basis is higher. Most IC models cannot be utilized indoors.
Other Forklifts
In warehouses where there are tight spaces, the narrow aisle electric forklift is most suitable. They are designed to pick up loads without having to face the lift towards the stacks. Rough terrain diesel forklifts have big tires for running on hard surfaces.
