A container forklift is specifically designed to load and unload huge, heavy freight containers. They are used to shuttle freight off and on ships, truck beds and trains. Container forklifts are the biggest and most durable kinds of forklifts manufactured. They have to be extremely maneuverable on uneven terrain and have enough torque and power to safely raise large containers. Typically, they have large pneumatic tires and heavy-duty diesel engines.
Like all kinds of forklifts, a container forklift uses forks to be able to raise the containers. Forks have to be positioned to make sure the load is secure during transport. Several kinds of container forklifts are just designed to lift the containers a few meters off the ground. Other container handlers use another technique for lifting containers to greater heights. A container handler makes use of a device attached to the front of the vehicle to clamp down on either end of the container like jaws. The machine is counterbalanced with weights to maintain stability.
Carrying and transferring containers is the main purpose of a container forklift. Regular forklifts do not have enough reach for working in ports. The forks are rated according to the most weight they can handle. The capabilities of the forklift must be posted prominently in the cockpit and must never be exceeded.
