Be Aware When Operating a Forklift Truck

A forklift is a big piece of equipment and hence safety measures must be taken when operating these kinds of hese types of trucks. Operators of forklifts are required by law to be taught and qualified to drive the machinery. Anybody who misuses a forklift truck could be charged with an offence. Misuse of this potentially dangerous machinery can result in death or serious injury. Safe operation of a forklift truck includes paying attention both to what is happening around the vehicle and to what is happening in the vehicle. Not different to driving an automobile, driving a lift truck requires being aware of pedestrians and other vehicles and keeping your attention on the road.

Important forklift driving guidelines

Worksite mishaps are all too common. Nonetheless, many accidents are avoidable by minimalizing the risks while working with dangerous and heavy machines.

The majority of operating surfaces are relatively rough and uneven are commonly encountered while driving a lift truck. The biggest hazards are pot holes, bumps, dock bridges, dock platforms, ramps and inclines. Forklifts are engineered to handle uneven surfaces, but it is the operators responsibility to be on the lookout for these hazards to keep control of the truck.

Visibility is one of the key factors in lift truck accidents. The operator is responsible for ensuring clear visibility when utilizing a forklift by inspecting that mirrors are positioned correctly and that all windows are unobstructed and clean. If a load is positioned in such a way that it obscures visibility for the driver, then the driver must put the lift truck in reverse and cautiously back down the ramp.

Operators of forklifts are lawfully required to perform every day checks of the forklift truck and its parts. A more thorough examination must be performed weekly. The tires, forks, engine, brakes and the rest should always be checked so as to guarantee good working condition. Correct inspections can help to prevent injury and accidents.
