A stock picker, also known as an order picker is a machine that is somewhat like a forklift. It enables the driver to use forks to pick up a pallet. An order picker is also capable of lifting the operator up to higher shelves for picking some things, and this feature is something the forklift does not offer. Usually, order pickers are operated by electricity. These kind of equipment are mostly used in a warehouse setting. Most often they are used for transporting pallets and doing certain tasks in the shelving and stocking department.
The order picker operator sits up on a platform where they operate the controls. These controls help to direct the equipment forward, backward or steer it from side to side. When the operator has positioned the unit in place the blades can be raised to the required level that makes it really convenient for the operator. For example, if the materials required, are situated on a shelf which the operator cannot reach, then entire platform can be lifted up to certain level. Due to the counterweight located at the other end, the unit remains balanced, even at higher levels.
The platform is then lowered back to its original position after the order has been picked. The order picker is then driven or directed to its next location. With the majority of models, it is possible to move the order picker while the platform is raised, although, several businesses may have policies and procedures in place preventing such maneuvers for safety reasons. An order picker is also able to place pallets on a shelf. Forklifts and stackers may be used to finish these specific tasks at several companies instead.
