Forklift Job Description

Job Description

The tasks of the lift truck driver are to safely transport goods and supplies from one location to another. They utilize forklift controls to perform precise movements such as raise and transporting cargo efficiently. Drivers of forklifts normally unload shipping containers, trailers, trains or other types of storage units. The operator of the forklift has the extra responsibility of performing regular checks on the equipment in order to ensure it is capable and safe to perform the necessary task.



Personal Qualities

It is important for a forklift driver to have basic writing and reading skills. Moreover, the forklift driver must be physically fit and can comfortably lift 30 pounds. They have to be physically able to drive a forklift; hence, they need the physical ability of using both arms, both hands and both feet. The forklift driver should ideally be able to stand for an 8 hour shift. In most work settings, they would be allowed to have two short coffee breaks and a half-hour lunch break during the day. It is essential that the driver of the forklift not be prone to reckless driving or rage of any type.



Training

Normally, forklift training is done on the job. This training includes control training and safety training, which is completed through a series of videos, and tests. A performance test will also be done on the lift truck. When the tests have been successfully completed, a license could be issued. This license must be renewed according to state and provincial laws and according to shop procedures. If you get the chance to finish your lift truck training on the job, it is a great idea and it is a different skill you could add to your resume.



Job Locations

In larger establishments like manufacturing or retail facilities, lift truck drivers may work in a warehouse department. Lift truck drivers could also work in other areas, depending on the businesses requirements. Forklifts are very handy pieces of machinery which could be found on logging sites and construction sites along with in nearly all ports, train yards and shipping and receiving facilities.
